PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

B. System Operation: Provide dumbwaiter operation by means
of hand rope, with automatic brake type dumbwaiter
machine.
1. Brake: Bronze friction plate disk design, operating
on full automatic in both up and down motion of car.
2. Arrange components so car remains in position under
design load when pull on hand rope is released,
without use of check or brake line.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
B. Product Data: Include complete information on system
design and installation requirements.
C. Shop Drawings: Include detailed dimensions of all
components, including locations of connections to other
work; load reactions at points of support; and
arrangement of all equipment.
D. Selection Samples: Include actual pieces of all standard
cab finishes, for Architect's selection.
E. Verification Samples: Selected cab finishes, not less
than 6 inches x 6 inches.
1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in
installing equipment of the type specified, with not less
than three years of experience and approved by
manufacturer of dumbwaiter system.
1.7 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
NOTE ** Insert below any code compliance requirements for
dumbwaiters.
A. Comply with ________ building code for manufacture and
installation of dumbwaiter system.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Provide manufacturer's six year limited warranty against
defective materials.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Provide dumbwaiter system as manufactured by Vincent
Whitney Company, Inc.; 60 Liberty Ship Way; P.O. Box
335; Sausalito, CA 94966. Telephone: 800-332-3286 or

B. Substitutions will not be acceptable.
2.2 DUMBWAITER
NOTE ** Geared automatic brake dumbwaiters are used
primarily in restaurants, nursing homes, libraries,
schools, warehouses, clubs, government buildings,
and other commercial applications.
NOTE **
NOTE ** Standard models are numbered as follows: GS models
are front opening, GD models are front and rear
opening, and GCP models are front and side opening.
A "1" preceding the model type is rated at 125
pounds. A "2" preceding the model type is rated at
150 pounds. "3" corresponds to 175 pounds, "4" to
200 pounds, and "5" to 250 pounds.
NOTE **
NOTE ** For example, 3GD is a front and rear opening
dumbwaiter rated at 175 pounds capacity.
NOTE **
A. Provide heavy-duty commercial grade system, model _____,
equipped with geared automatic brake.
NOTE ** Automatic brake dumbwaiters (non-geared) are used
primarily in condominiums, apartment buildings,
townhouses and private residences.
NOTE **
NOTE ** Standard models are numbered as follows: AS models
are front opening, AD models are front and rear
opening, and ACP models are front and side opening.
A "1" preceding model type denotes a 65 pound
capacity. A "2" preceding model type denotes a 90
pound capacity. "3" denotes 105 pound capacity,
and "4" denotes 120 pound capacity.
NOTE **
NOTE ** For example, Model 4AS is a front opening model
with 120 pound capacity.
B. Provide non-geared residential grade system, model _____,
equipped with automatic brake.
NOTE ** Select one of the following three car
constructions, and delete the others.
C. Car: Fabricate of 3/4 inch plywood with birch veneer,
finished with clear lacquer. Dado, glue, and screw all
joints to assure rigid construction. Include single
adjustable shelf.
D. Car: Fabricate of mild steel with painted enamel finish.
Weld and bolt components to assure rigid construction.
Include single fixed shelf.
E. Car: Fabricate of 304 stainless steel, with Number 4
mill finish. Weld and bolt components to assure rigid
construction. Include single fixed shelf.
F. Guide Rails: Douglas Fir, dense select grade, kiln
dried.
G. Counterweights: Cast iron or steel, adjustable to insure
proper operating balance.
H. Hand Rope: 3/4 inch diameter, soft woven rope joined
with swivel coupling.
NOTE ** The first hoist rope below should be selected for
commercial grade systems. The second hoist rope is
for residential models.
I. Hoist Rope: 5/8 inch diameter steel overlaid with hemp
(Marlin clad).
J. Hoist Rope: 3/16 inch steel aircraft cable.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that finished hoistway is plumb and square and
correctly sized.
B. Verify that horizontal guide rail blocking is in correct
position, securely fastened, and ready for connection of
guide rails.
C. Verify that machine supports of proper size are in
position and that openings to hoistway are properly sized
and located.
3.2 INSTALLATION
NOTE ** For commercial applications only, geared models
comply with ASME standards only when a steel car is
used.
NOTE **
NOTE ** Delete the paragraph below for residential
applications, or when plywood car is used in
commercial applications.
A. Install dumbwaiter in accordance with ASME A17.1.
B. Comply with manufacturer's instructions for assembly and
installation of all dumbwaiter components.
3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. Verify that dumbwaiter is properly installed and
operating smoothly. Make any adjustments required to
achieve safe and quiet operation.
B. Clean any exposed areas that have become soiled during
installation process, using materials and cleaning agents
appropriate for substrate.
